photoKristine's Story

As a volunteer with her daughter for several years at the
Metrocrest Social Services holiday store, Kristine never imagined she would seek financial assistance for her own family. She also never expected to lose her job.

After 12 years of employment, Kristine was laid off when her position from a local telecommunications company was eliminated. Upon receiving this bad news, she immediately took action and applied for unemployment benefits, Food Stamps, and Medicaid.

In addition, Kristine made a sound decision and used a portion of her severance package to pay her June rent in advance. She even went a step farther and applied for a loan adjustment to her mortgage to reduce her monthly payments. Although proactive, Kristine still found herself coming up short of funds to pay her bills. She became concerned when she realized she didn’t have adequate funds for groceries.

Through previous experience as a MSS volunteer, Kristine knew about the services available to individuals in need and called for an appointment. She met with Jenny Simon, MSS caseworker and requested assistance with her water bill and groceries. Jenny reviewed her application and checked online regarding the status of Kristine’s unemployment and Food Stamp applications. Since the Food Stamp application would take a few more weeks to process and the unemployment benefits were pending authorization by the Texas Workforce Commission, Jenny approved four weeks of food from the MSS Food Pantry and payment of Kristine’s water bill. These two actions provided important relief to Kristine so she could focus on her job search.

A first time visit to any social services agency can be daunting but Kristine has this to say: “The people at Metrocrest have been so kind and helpful. Jenny has been so understanding, putting me at ease and making me feel welcome and not alone. Thanks so much for the service you provide, and the great attitude you do it with!”
